NICTD intends to hire a full time Track and B&B Department Trainer to perform training, qualification, and oversight duties within its Track and B&B Departments. Duties include, but are not limited to, new hire, GCOR/RRW, machine operator, foreman, continuous welded rail (CWR), welder, & FRA213 training, EETS officer, and other managerial and safety enforcement duties as assigned.  Trainer will review and expand on current training programs, including working with consultant trainers.  Shall assist in the investigation of accidents and incidents.  This person may also be required to assist the Roadmasters in track safety inspections from time to time.  This person may also be required to serve as a hearing or investigation officer from time to time.  Must have and maintain valid motor vehicle operating licenses.

Position Requirements:   NICTD is only accepting applications at this time from current NICTD employees.  The following are some of the skills that will be considered in the selection of candidates for interviews:

 

  • Satisfactory record of GCOR and Roadway Worker experience. 
  • Foreman, machine operator, and welding experience.
  • Coursework or experience in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite with emphasis on Powerpoint, Excel, and Word.  
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal skills; ability to attain results when working with others.  
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • While normal work hours are Monday through Thursday, applicants must be willing and able to work varied shift hours, varied days off, and extended hours as needed to meet training, audit, or other deadlines.
  • Ability to multi-task among competing short term priorities while maintaining a professional and pleasant disposition.

Supervision:  The position reports to the Director of Track and Structures.

 

 Salary and Benefits:  The starting salary range for qualified candidates is $60,000 to $70,000 per year.  Actual salary will be set with consideration to budget, experience, and education.  Life insurance, paid vacation, paid holidays, comp time, limited free travel on NICTD trains for self and family, supplemental pension plan, and medical/dental/vision health benefits are provided.  The position is subject to pension benefits and contribution obligations administered by the Railroad Retirement Board.  Details are available during the interview process. 

 

Physical Demands Must be in good physical health to fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.  This is an indoor/outdoor position where the trainer frequently must be able to work and walk in difficult environmental conditions or to locations not accessible by motor vehicle.  Work is done on significantly uneven surfaces, in close proximity to high voltage electrical power, and may require work on snow or ice covered ground during winter.  Levels of activity vary from moderate to intense.  Stressful situations may occur.  Exposure to heat, humidity, cold, rain, sleet, snow, and wind is common.
