Terminal Carman
Description: Terminal Carmen duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Clean disinfect interiors (seats, floors, toilets, walls, and windows) and exteriors (stainless steel sides and windows) of railroad cars used to transport passengers.
- Inspect, move, couple, and uncouple passenger cars at terminals to the extent needed to prepare cars for train service.
- Refill water tanks on cars.
- Conduct safety tests, perform inspections, make minor repairs, perform preventive maintenance, and other duties as assigned by their supervisor.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- High school or GED equivalent
- Eighteen (18) years of age
- Must be in good physical health to fulfill the essential functions of the assignment, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Must be able to pass engineer licensing requirements, rules examinations, and all other requirements of the training programs for cleaner and terminal carman assignments.
- Must be able to read, write, and communicate clearly to understand and follow the General Code of Operating Rules, communicate essential operational and safety information, and pass periodic rule/safety/technical examinations.
- Mechanical aptitude, experience operating heavy moving machinery, experience with cleaning, good physical strength and endurance, and good interpersonal skills when interacting with supervisors, fellow employees, and passengers.
- Flexible about unexpected changes in work assignments or priorities.
- Ability to work in Michigan City, Hammond, Gary, or Chicago based on the needs of the service. For work in different locations, employees have a pass to use NICTD trains. However, the time in travel to and from the assignment is not paid.
- Valid motor vehicle license and reliable transportation to and from assignments.
- Must be able to pass drug test, physical examination, and satisfactory background check as a condition subsequent to any offer of employment.
- Persons with prior railroad employment must be presently employed by a railroad or be able to provide written evidence of their furlough for economic reasons or written evidence establishing that they are eligible to be rehired.
Environmental Conditions: Work is indoors or outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the day or night. Work is done on significantly uneven surfaces and may require work on snow or ice covered ground during winter. Levels of activity vary from moderate to intense. Exposure to heat, humidity, cold, rain, sleet, snow, and wind is common.
Salary and Benefits:
Wages start at $25.06 per hour and after completion of terminal carmen training top out at $33.11 per hour. Pay increases are in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Benefits include pensions, tuition reimbursement, medical care, dental care, college tuition reimbursement, and life insurance.
