Assistant Road Foreman of Engineers - Internal Applicants Only
Description of Duties:
- Direct oversight and supervision of locomotive engineers and evaluation of their performance, in accordance with NICTD’s operating rules and practices. Close coordination with CSS and Metra supervisory personnel is also required. Supervision may also involve other operating crew members.
- Manage and oversee locomotive engineer certification requirements with an eventual objective of becoming the District’s DSLE.
- Timely perform regular operational tests as required by 49 CFR 217.9.
- Participate in the District’s Employee Efficiency Testing Program.
- Periodically ride trains to assess employee compliance with rules and special instructions.
- Lead the development and implementation of rules instruction and changes, training, accident investigation, and disciplinary matters.
- Manage employee attendance and work coverage.
- Responsible for onboarding and training of Transportation Employees.
- Perform all other duties as may be prescribed by the Assistant Chief Transportation Officer and Road Foreman of Engines.
Position Requirements: The following minimum requirements must be met to be considered for selection for an interview:
• 21 years of age or older.
• High school diploma or GED is required; associate or bachelor’s degree with relevant major is strongly preferred but not required.
• Certified and licensed NICTD or CSS locomotive engineer in good standing with a minimum of 5 years’ operating experience on NICTD.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Self-motivated and interested in motivating others to adopt proper safety and operationally focused work habits.
• Superior safety, attendance, and work service records.
• Able to accurately input data into computer systems, including Microsoft Office Suite. Able to write objective, fact-based memos and reports.
• Knowledgeable of relevant Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) relating to railroad and locomotive engineer obligations.
• An expressed interest in the continuance of adopting new practices.
• Able to multi-task among competing and changing priorities while maintaining a pleasant disposition. Superior communication and listening skills.
• Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record. Reliable transportation to and from Michigan City, Indiana, in all types of weather.
• Willing to work indoors and outdoors, varied shift hours, occasionally varied days off, weekends, and holidays if operationally necessary.
• Competent, comfortable, and keenly interested in computer hardware and software relating to their duties and the Transportation Department.
• Able to climb on and under rail cars and locomotives.
Selection is also subject to satisfactory results from a post-offer physical examination (including drug and alcohol screening tests) and a post-offer background evaluation (including criminal and trust-related criteria).
Schedule: The Assistant Road Foreman of Engines will have hours and days off assigned by the Assistant Chief Transportation Officer. Schedules and assignments are subject to change based on the needs of the service and managerial staffing requirements. The successful applicant must expect off-duty calls from other managers and employees to respond to situational emergencies.
Supervision: The position reports to the Assistant Chief Transportation Officer.
Salary and Benefits: The expected salary range is $89,000-$94,000. Health care, dental care, vacation, holidays, supplemental pension plans, Railroad Retirement Board benefits, and comp time are some of the benefits available. Credit for time served in other railroad employment, including approved military leaves, will be applied in determining vacation day entitlements.
Work Environment: The employee occasionally may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level ranges from quiet to moderately loud. Duties include service in varying outdoor conditions applicable to NICTD’s service area.
