NICTD is hiring a Trainmaster to help lead, manage, and supervise operations and personnel within the Transportation Department. This is a unique career opportunity for someone with a genuine interest in supervising, training, and overseeing NICTD’s transportation operations as well as providing proactive participation on special tasks and projects. The successful applicant will be part of a close-knit team of dedicated transportation professionals who share a common interest in delivering safe and excellent passenger train service within Northwest Indiana and the Chicago metro area.
Summary Description: Trainmasters are the first level leaders and supervisors in the Transportation Department. Working closely with The Chief Operating Officer, Chief Transportation Officer, Assistant Chief Transportation Officer, Terminal Superintendent, Director of Training and Compliance, Manager of Train Operations, Road Foreman of Engines, Assistant Road Foreman of Engines and Chief Dispatcher, trainmasters provide training, oversight, leadership, and supervision of engineers and conductors. Trainmasters ensure that employees always comply with NICTD’s operating rules and practices. Close coordination with CSS and Metra supervisory personnel as well as NICTD Police is also required.
Description of Duties:
Basic Qualifications:
Railroad Experience: Persons with prior railroad employment must be: (1) presently employed by a railroad, or (2) be able to provide written evidence of their furlough for economic reasons (e.g. – furlough notice or letter from railroad); or (3) written evidence from the railroad establishing that they are eligible to be rehired.
Schedule: Trainmasters have hours and days off assigned by the Senior Trainmaster. Schedules and assignments are subject to change based on the needs of the service and managerial staffing requirements. Trainmasters can expect and must answer off-duty calls from other managers and employees as well as calls for help with situational emergencies.
Supervision: The position reports to the Senior Trainmaster.
Work Environment: The employee occasionally may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level ranges from quiet to moderately loud. Duties include service in varying outdoor conditions applicable to NICTD’s service area. The employee must be able to climb and walk on uneven surfaces in all weather conditions. The employee also must be able to pass the standard physical examination to qualify for service as an engineer.
Salary and Benefits: The expected salary range is $85,000-$90,000. Health care, dental care, vacation, holidays, supplemental pension plans, Railroad Retirement Board benefits, and comp time are some of the benefits available. Credit for time served in other railroad employment, including approved military leaves, will be applied in determining vacation day entitlements.

Description of Duties:
- First level leadership and supervision of all operating crew members.
- Maintain conductor or engineer qualifications to train and operate when needed.
- Perform training of engineers and conductors.
- Perform regular operational tests as required by 49 CFR 217.9 in conjunction with the Road Foreman of Engines (RFE) and Assistant Road Foreman of Engines.
- Participate in the maintenance of the District’s Employee Efficiency Testing program.
- Ride trains to assess employee compliance with rules and special instructions.
- Participate in the development and implementation of rules instruction and changes, training, accident investigation, and discipline process.
- Serve as a hearing officer or witness in company hearings and investigations.
- Other duties as assigned by the Senior Trainmaster & Manager of Train Operations.
Basic Qualifications:
- 21 Years of age or older.
- High school diploma or GED. Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
- Trainmaster, assistant trainmasters or first level (foreman or higher) leadership or supervisory experience in a railroad or transit environment is strongly preferred. Licensed conductors or engineers with a combined minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a conductor and/or engineer also are eligible to apply. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Past Managerial experience preferred.
- Self-motivated and interested in motivating others to focus on proper and safe work habits.
- Must display a personal history of working in a safe, prudent and organized manner.
- Ability to accurately input data into computer systems, including fluency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Awareness of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and knowledge of pertinent Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
- An expressed interest in aiding the District with multiple current and future projects.
- Satisfactory operating, driving, and attendance records.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all forms of weather.
- Ability to work varying shift schedules, including nights and weekends, as needed in support of the District’s operations.
